Class AdvertisementThe Institute of Applied Agriculture at the University of Maryland, College Park, is offering an “Introduction to Farriery” Winter Workshop taught by Maryland farrier Mike Poe, CJF.

The workshop will cover the scientific principles regarding care and maintenance of the equine hoof, its anatomy and function and evaluation of farrier procedures.

This class is open to ALL interested students, no experience is necessary. All farrier tools will be provided.

About The Class
It is geared to provide horse owners and professionals a basic understanding of the equine hoof, its function and care requirements and to prepare those students interested in continuing their education on care of the equine hoof.

When & Where
January 4 - January 22, 2010
Tuesdays (Lecture) 3-5:30pm
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (Lab) 3-5:30pm
University of Maryland, College Park Campus Farm

How To Register
Students currently enrolled at UMCP can register through www.testudo.umd.edu. ANSC 489F (2 credits).

Everyone else can register for the course as a non-credit workshop through the Institute of Applied Agriculture (iaa.umd.edu). The registration form is available at http://iaa.umd.edu/Farrier%20Registration-1.pdf (PDF).

Registration deadline is December 31, 2009.

About the Instructor
Mike Poe is an American Farrier’s Association (AFA) Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF), which is the highest level of certification offered by the national organization. Only 20 percent of the approximately 2700 AFA members are CJF certified. Poe is the owner of Alpha Farrier Services. (www.alphafarrier.com)

Since graduating from the Eastern School of Farrier Science and studying in the Animal Sciences program at Virginia Tech, Poe has shod horses in seven states on both the East and West coasts.

He works with equestrian programs like the one at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he has been the regular farrier for the university horses for almost four years and has been a guest lecturer in several of the university’s Equine Studies classes.

The Institute of Applied Agriculture is a two-year program in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, College Park. The IAA offers in-depth curricula in Landscape Management, Golf Course Management, Turfgrass Management, General Ornamental Horticulture, Equine Business Management, and Agricultural Business Management.
