The Importance of Certification

October 1, 2008
I spend a lot of time talking about the importance of Certification. I use the American Farriers Association as an example, but any effort towards furthering one's skill is to be commended.

Going to clinics is all well and good. I go to many clinics. But all too often we go to clinics on Saturday and forget everything by Monday. A Certification program shows a willingness not just to learn, but also to showcase skills and knowledge in front of respected colleagues.

The AFA, BWFA and The Guild of Professional Farriers are all good domestic organizations for certification. An even older one is The Worshipful Company of Farriers in England. These are all respected programs and have rigorous testing procedures.

There are many other examples of "Certification" which hold less credence. For example, paying a $500 fee to get a text book, instructional DVD and a certificate does not make for a qualified a hoof care provider.

So check credentials before entrusting your horse's health to a sub-standard practitioner.
